Hockey season ends in Penticton

Four teams battle at playoffs

A healthy Shawnigan contingent set up camp in Penticton during Spring Break, as four hockey teams competed in the CSSHL's boys playoffs.

Midget Prep:

After placing 10th in the league's top division, the School's no. 1 team earned terrific results throughout the playoff campaign.

The prep squad earned three consecutive wins, beating Pacific Coast Academy (5-1), International Hockey Academy (3-1), and Okanagan Hockey Academy Edmonton (5-1).

The victories put the group into a the Prep Division's Consolation Final against Rink Hockey Academy, with Rink striking one minute into a 3-on-3 overtime period to win 4-3.

Jackson D. led all Shawnigan skaters with seven points throughout the week, including a four-goal outing against PCHA.

Varsity Black:

The stronger of Shawnigan's two midget varsity teams, Shawnigan Black finished third in the regular season which meant a shot at defending the School's division championship.

Shawnigan Black opened the playoffs on a high, when Kaleb M. struck early in overtime to give the squad an upset 3-2 victory over top-ranked Pilot Mound Hockey Academy.   The team then lost 4-3 in regulation time to Coeur D'Alene, leaving it one point shy of a semifinal berth.

Varsity Gold:

Competing in the midget varsity's consolation round, the Varsity Gold squad earned wins over IHA (6-1) and Banff Hockey Academy (2-1) as well as dropping a 6-3 decision to Delta Hockey Academy.  The results were enough to advance the team to the consolation final, which ended in another loss to Delta.

Bantam Prep:

After struggling to just three wins in the regular season, Shawnigan's bantam squad produced a superb week beating Edge 5-2 in a qualifying game on Wednesday.  The win meant the team would play three more games, which included a loss to Delta (4-1), a momentous win over OHA (3-2), and a 5-1 loss to Yale Hockey Academy.

Both Will G. and Campbell A. had strong showings in the Shawnigan goal, while John L. led the team with five goals and two assists.

"I thought the kids competed and believed in one another," said Coach Brian Passmore of the team's upstart performance.  "They can be proud of representing the School well and for accomplishing all of the things we've stressed all year."

The School was also honoured to have five players recognized with individual awards at a ceremony on Thursday evening.

Olin W. and Jojo T. were both named to the Midget Prep Division's All-Academic Team, Nathan G. and Matt K earned spots on the Midget Varsity Division's All-Academic Team, and Seiya T. represented the School on the Bantam Prep All-Academic Team.
