Recently, sixty kindergarten students from Discovery Elementary School paid a visit to the to our campus. During their visit, they were engaged in a tour of the Mark Hobson Hatchery. They observed fin clipping of some of the coho fry being reared in the facility. They also helped with the release of 500 fry (approximately 7% of our total fry production this year) into Shawnigan Creek. When they weren't engaged in salmonid- related activities, they had great fun collecting, sorting and analyzing an abundance of benthic macro-invertebrates ("bugs!") from pond-dipping in Lake Omar. Throughout the whole process, 21 of our students did a fabulous job of mentoring these young children. All the parents, teachers and DFO representatives were so impressed with their genuine enthusiasm and patience in working with the little ones. Me too!
