A rainy season ended in accolades for Shawnigan's tennis team.
Coach Stewart Candelaria paid tribute to the tennis players during Tuesday's Headmaster's Gathering, as Mr. David Robertson presented athletes with the medals they had earned.
They began with the junior boys team which won a bronze medal at the Junior Provincial Championship, May 11-12. Coach Candelaria singled out Pol H. for his efforts in Burnaby, saying he played "the best I've ever seen him play."
After the midterm break, the team headed to Vancouver for the Provincial Championship, stopping on the way to allow the senior girls to face Crofton House in the rain-delayed final of the ISA Championship. The girls lost a very close match to Crofton House to finish 2nd overall in the ISA event.
The full senior team then headed to the Provincial 'AA' Championship, played at Queen Elizabeth Park. Playing terrific tennis throughout the event, the team lost only one matchup – a semifinal encounter with SMUS – ultimately beating Brentwood in the bronze medal showdown.
The 2017 campaign marked the team's 6th consecutive appearance at the Provincial Championships, and the 11th time in the past 17 years that Shawnigan has finished in the top three at Provincials.
