Shawnigan Open

Some of Canada's best squash players compete

Nearly 100 fans gasped and applauded as the 2017 Shawnigan Open drew to a captivating conclusion on Sunday.

After three days of play, a field that included some of the top players in the country was narrowed down to two breathtaking finals.

In the Girls Open event, defending Canadian Under-15 champ Lucia B. – a newcomer to Shawnigan – defeated SMUS star Brooke H. in four games.

In the Boys Open final, SLS grad Ryan Picken finally slayed his dragon, beating rival Michael M. for the first time in his career.  The two had met several times in the past, including Michael's five-game triumph in last year's Canadian U-19 championship final.

In other action, Colin W. continued his family's strong tradition by winning the Boys Silver division while Alan L. captured the Boys Bronze event.  Other strong finishes included Macau's Gigi Y. finishing third in the Girls Open and Justin M. placing second in the Boys Gold bracket.

Organizers thank their many sponsors, including Bow Mel Chrysler, The Peer Group, and the Taiji Brand Group.
