Shawnigan visits the Japan Super Science Fair

Three young scientists spent their midterm break conferencing with the world, as Shawnigan sent another group to the annual Japan Super Science Fair.

Leaving midway through the holiday, Stefan E., Josh W. and Jennifer S. travelled from Shawnigan to Osaka, immediately heading onwards to Japan's ancient Imperial Capital of Kyoto.

Joining thousands of other students from 24 countries across the globe, the group ventured the host venues, Ritsumeikan High School and Ritsumeikan University, hearing a presentation from Nobel Prize winner Hideki Shirakawa at the opening ceremonies.

Daily activities ran from early in the morning until late in the evening, as the group presented their own research and posters, participated in science zone challenges and talks, and enjoyed cultural presentations from their peers.

For his presentation about algorithmic machine learning on a chess simulator, Stefan presented exceptionally well, earning 1st place in the Computer Science zone.  Josh also earned a prize, finishing in a tie for first in the Flight zone, while Jennifer's project on how backdrop colours affects spider web creation was also well received.

Accompanied by Ms. Meghan Montgomery, the Shawnigan contingent also enjoyed some high-tech industrial tours as well as some sightseeing around Kyoto's famed landmarks.
