The start of the trip was a 3 a.m. wake-up call to catch a 6 a.m. flight to Seattle and then on to Minneapolis.
On arrival, we collected our things and drove about one hour south to the town of Faribault, MN where Shattuck-St. Mary's is located.
The boys got some prep done, went for dinner and had an early night.
Friday morning we beat Alaska. The boys played great! In the evening, we played the host team – Shattuck – the top-rated team in the USA bantam national rankings. We were dominant in the first half of the first period and then gave up two soft goals. After two periods, we were down 6-0. In the third, we were back to our competitive selves and won the frame 1-0. The final was 6-1 in favour of Shattuck, and it would turn out to be our only loss of the tournament.
On Saturday, we beat Chicago handily in the morning, and then topped Madison in the afternoon.
Because of the tournament setup, we finished second in our pool and only had a chance to play for the bronze medal.
In the bronze medal game, we played Alaska again. They had a stellar goaltender! We stuck with it and scored a late goal to seal the bronze medal with a 2-1 victory.
