Visiting Doctors

Presentations on eyes and art

Shawnigan welcomed two very different professionals on Thursday, as students got some valuable perspectives on differing fields of study.

Laura Robson and Erica Hamilton's grade 8 science classes enjoyed a pair of presentations from Dr. Trevor Miranda.

The Cowichan Valley-based optometrist outlined his history and experiences working in Canada as well as in the developing world.

Building on cow eye dissections the students have already been doing, Miranda spoke about the anatomy and function of the human eye. He also discussed some diseases and conditions that can affect vision, and how he treats patients and improves their quality of life.

Visiting from Quest University in Squamish, Dr. Jim Cohn conducted a seminar in Jay Connolly's 'AP' English Literature 12 class.

Cohn presented two works to the class: W.H. Auden's poem Musee des Beaux Arts and Pieter Bruegel's painting Landscape with the Fall of Icarus.

An exercise in 'close reading,' he challenged students to analyze the poem and the painting – textually and visually – and to consider their components and techniques.

Cohn elicited the students' interpretations of the pieces, and also discussed the artists' possible attitudes towards the subject matter of suffering and martyrdom.

Cohn and his colleague, Trevor Mannion, also visited the Guidance Office to talk to students about post-secondary options at Quest University.
