A Shawnigan student in Ottawa

A behind-the-scenes visit to Parliament

A Shawnigan student is back from what she's calling a 'life-changing experience' in the nation's capital.

Victoria S. travelled to Ottawa last week for a behind-the-scenes glimpse at Canadian politics.

The Forum for Young Canadians offers 15-19 year-olds the chance to visit Parliament Hill, meet key figures in government, and mix with other young leaders from across the country.

While she enjoyed receptions with MPs, had breakfast with senators and gave a speech in a cabinet simulation, Victoria says that one of the most memorable moments was during an unexpected fire alarm, when she mingled with well-dressed officials while standing in ankle-deep snow, waiting to go back inside.

Later on, the Grade 11 student had the opportunity to meet Justin Trudeau himself. "Some people say you are the leaders of tomorrow," she remembers the Prime Minister telling her group. "I think they’re wrong. You are the leaders of today.” Victoria has been influential in raising money and awareness for Alzheimer's Disease, and says she was inspired by the Prime Minister's message, vowing not to let age be a barrier to accomplishing her many goals.

Victoria says she became interested in politics at a young age, and was encouraged not only by witnessing the inner workings of government, but also by seeing what all of the various players in government are able to accomplish.

Speaking in Chapel upon her return, Victoria encouraged her peers to get involved in the Forum for Young Canadians program, saying "the hectic schedule, memorable stories and unbreakable friendships made the trip one I will never forget."
