This past weekend, Shawnigan's 1st XV travelled to Vancouver to play Carson Graham Secondary School.
The game was played at St George's School as part of the first round of the new "Stadium Series," which matches up schools from different regions of the Province in order to get more accurate rankings in place leading up to the B.C. 'AAAA' Championship later in May.
Carson Graham came into the game with only one loss this year – to St George's – and as the sixth-ranked team in the Province. This year they are loaded with big, athletic students, having won the B.C. 'AA' High School Football Championship earlier in the year. Given these facts, we were expecting a physical battle, and were not disappointed. Carson came out of the gates very fast and hard, taking much of the play to Shawnigan early on in the match up. However, as nerves settled, Shawnigan was able to get some rhythm going on attack, and the tides slowly turned in our favour. In the end, Shawnigan won the match fairly comfortably, though everyone left the game with a great deal of respect for our opponents on the day.
Shawnigan plays host to the 'Stadium Series' on May 7th, when the 1st XV will face Earl Marriott.
