Shawnigan students continue to contribute to Portland Island's ecosystem.
Last weekend, a group of eight students made the trip to the small island near Swartz Bay to help remove Himalayan blackberry.
Working under the guidance of a Canadian National Parks biologist, the group worked hard on Friday and Saturday to cut the long, thorny branches and then dig out the roots of the invasive species.
The group, led by Mr. Scott Noble and Ms. Jenny Ferris, enjoyed a rainy campout at Shell Beach and successfully cleared the Himalayan Blackberry from a significant portion of the orchard.
Shawnigan Lake School has been active in school stewardship of Portland Island since 1995, and Scott Noble has been regularly taking groups of students to remove broom and other invasive species.
