Regatta Takes Over the Lake

One of the largest events on the School calendar, with nearly every student and staff member involved in one way or another, the 64th annual Shawnigan Regatta roiled the waters of our namesake lake on May 9-11, with excellent showings from our own rowers and lots of promise for the future.

“We had a great regatta,” Head of Rowing Mrs. Jennifer Parfitt said. “We are excited about the results we had and the conduct of our athletes in challenging conditions. There were lessons learned throughout which no doubt will help aid us in our journey to the Canadian nationals at the end of this month. Furthermore, the performance of our U17 novice crews and U15 crews were very promising for future years and the upcoming local regatta in Nanaimo on May 24.”

It was a bittersweet moment for Grade 12 rower Shelby H., who will continue her rowing career at the University of Portland next year.

“My third and final Shawnigan Regatta came with a lot of mixed feelings,” Shelby said. “The Shawnigan rowing program and coaches have brought me so far, and looking back on my previous Shawnigan Regattas I am so proud of the rower I have become. This being said, I know my rowing journey is far from over, but I am very sad that this chapter in it is coming to an end. Racing on the lake that I learned to row on comes with a lot of feelings, wanting to perform well in front of my family and friends, mixed with the nostalgia surrounding all the rows and early mornings that lead up to moments like these.

“More than anything, this regatta was about leaving it all on our home course and making not just our coaches and teammates proud but also making ourselves proud. As one of the captains and as someone who has coached many of the Grade 8s in the program, I felt overwhelming pride and excitement over how our junior crews are doing, and their successes were equally as moving as my own. Although I am sad to be leaving the program and School, I know that Shawnigan rowing is growing, and I truly believe that the program I am leaving behind is stronger than the one I came into, and I know it will continue to grow and thrive in the coming years.”

Shawnigan crews made 22 A finals, collecting two gold medals, two silvers and eight bronzes, as well as one fourth-place finish, three fifths, and six sixths.
