Inter-House Is Back!

In addition to being one of the most important traditions at Shawnigan, inter-House competition is also a huge part of creating culture within the boarding houses. That’s why the School wastes no time in getting the inter-House schedule under way each fall.

This year’s schedule kicked off last Friday, at the end of just the second week of classes, with inter-House Air Band. Two days later, students were back in their House teams, squaring off in Tug of War after a quick pivot from the originally scheduled track and field competition due to damp field conditions. One of the most popular events on the inter-House slate, track and field hasn’t been cancelled altogether – it will take place later in the year.

Among the girls’ Houses, Strathcona took an early lead in the inter-House standings, taking first in Air Band, and second in Tug of War behind Renfrew. Lonsdale’s House moved into first overall among the boys’ Houses, with second-place finishes in both events, behind Lake’s in Air Band, and Duxbury in Tug of War. The Grade 8s in Samuel House don’t compete against the big Houses, so for Tug of War, they took on each other, and the girls prevailed over the boys.

Although competition between Houses is the focus of inter-House, what is really important is how it helps build character, energy and morale within the Houses. Encouraged by Spirit Captains, students dress up in their House colours and paint their faces before their charge into action.

Not limited merely to athletic competition, inter-House also includes a wide array of events that allow all students to participate and contribute to their Houses’ success. The standings are finalized in June with Academic scores playing the decisive role.
