University Connections

Representatives from nearly 50 universities across Canada – including many of the top post-secondary institutions in the country – were on campus earlier this week to connect with students from Shawnigan and other local schools at the Canadian Universities Event.

The CUE makes stops across Canada, and Shawnigan hosts this event every two years, alternating with nearby Brentwood College School.

Every Canadian province except Prince Edward Island had at least one university in attendance. Students in Grades 10, 11 and 12 were invited to attend, and a few Grade 9s even dropped by the event to get an early start on scouting out their futures. The gym was open for two hours, and hundreds of students from Shawnigan and other schools took advantage of the excellent opportunity, with several coming away with new thoughts about their academic pathways.

Students were presented with a tip sheet from the Shawnigan Guidance Office before connecting with university representatives at the event.

“The value of hosting the Canadian University Event is that it brings more than 40 universities, with a wide range of programs, right to our students,” Head of University Guidance Mr. Greer Bevel commented. “Many of them come in with preconceived ideas shaped by family or peers, but this fair lets them explore options they may not have considered, in regions they might not have thought about. It can be the spark that connects them to the right program – something like game design at the University of Guelph – that they might not have discovered otherwise.

“It’s also a benefit to neighbouring schools who join us for the event, and to our counselling staff, who attend the counsellor session beforehand. That session gives us updates on new programs, admissions changes, residence updates, and other details we need to guide students well. Hosting the event every second year, in partnership with Brentwood, also strengthens our ties with universities and keeps our knowledge current.”

Although this is the largest university event on our campus this year, the School has several other university visits planned throughout the year. The Guidance Office encourages all Grade 10, 11 and 12 students to take advantage of the opportunities to connect with representatives and learn more about their post-secondary options.

Some of these universities are planning return visits to campus this year, along with several others from around the world. For a list of those universities and when they are visiting, please click here.
