Announcing the 2025 Graham L. Anderson Award for Alumni Scholars
Congratulations to Melanie Bristoll ’20 (Groves’), Jenny Zhu ’21 (Kaye’s), and Daniel Enge ’18 (Copeman’s), the recipients of the 2025 Graham L. Anderson Award for Alumni Scholars.
Melanie Bristoll ’20 (Groves’)
Melanie finishing a half-marathon in Portugal in 2025.
Melanie was embedded into Shawnigan’s athletic program from the moment she first arrived on campus. From field hockey to soccer, she was a leader both on and off the field. This year, she is following her passion for sport and is attending the University of Michigan’s School of Kinesiology, where she will pursue a master’s degree in sport management. Passionate about advancing gender equity in sport, she hopes to become an advocate for women in leadership roles within the athletic world. As she works towards this goal, Melanie cites Ms. Andi Conroy as a role model, noting her leadership, compassion, and strength through adversity as qualities she would like to embody in her future career.
“My personal goal is to help young women break barriers in sport and give back to the
communities that have shaped me. Inspired by the strong alumni networks at Shawnigan and
Michigan, I hope to support future students just as you have supported me.” – Melanie Bristoll
Yuruo (Jenny) Zhu ’21 (Kaye’s)
Jenny working in TRIUMF, the Canadian Particle Accelerator, in 2022
During her time at Shawnigan, Jenny embraced academic challenges with determination and enthusiasm. As both an Academic Captain and Prefect, Jenny served as a role model for her peers throughout her Grade 12 year. Now pursuing a degree in Physics at the University of British Columbia, Jenny continues to embody the same characteristics of leadership and perseverance. Despite facing unexpected challenges at UBC, including exclusion and peer misogyny, Jenny pressed on, using these experiences as a catalyst for change. Her resilience has since led her to become co-president of the UBC Undergraduate Physics Society, where she created a meaningful impact within the community.
“My academic goal is to pursue a PhD in physics and work as a clinical medical physicist
in a teaching hospital, where I can contribute to patient care, mentor students, and conduct
research that improves treatment outcomes. Personally, I am committed to continuing my work
in science communication and advocacy. I hope to build safer, more inclusive communities in
STEM, especially for students who, like me, once struggled to see themselves represented in
Science.” – Jenny Zhu
Daniel Enge ’18 (Copeman’s)
When Daniel arrived at Shawnigan in Grade 10, he was instantly a role model for his Copeman's housemates. On many occasions, they would find Daniel studying hard in his room. His passion for academics was inspired by his late grandmother, Anne Enge, who pursued a Bachelor of Social Work in order to create a better life for herself and her children. Motivated by her example, Daniel excelled in his studies and was awarded the inaugural Furlonger Métis Scholarship. Since graduating from Shawnigan, he has continued to pursue his academic goals with determination and focus. Today, he is working towards a Master of Science in Mathematics at the University of British Columbia.
“As a Métis person, one of my lifelong goals is to represent Indigenous voices in mathematics and academia – potentially as a professor. I was fortunate to grow up in a family that deeply valued education and its transformative power. My hope is to inspire others to pursue their studies and to serve as a mirror for Indigenous youth.” – Daniel Enge

The teachers and classes I had there truly sparked my passion for history.”

Abbie Vandivere ’97 (Groves’) and Trisha Dalke ’16 (Groves’)’s passion for art has taken them both to the Netherlands. Trisha is completing her MSc in Technical Art History at the University of Amsterdam, and Abbie has worked as a paintings conservator at the Mauritshuis museum in The Hague since 2015. This spring, they had the opportunity to work together on a large painting from the museum’s collection: The Bull by Paulus Potter.
