Shawnigan's midget hockey teams have continued their hot starts to the season.
After a 6-2 win over Banff on Thursday evening, the Midget Varsity squad ventured to Idaho for three games against Coeur d'Alene. Winning all three by a combined margin of 26-6, Shawnigan Midget Varsity has now won all 17 games so far this year.
At a CSSHL showcase at nearby Westhills Arena, the Midget Prep team earned three victories, beating IHA (8-3 on Friday), Edge (5-4 on Saturday), and Banff (7-1 on Sunday). The Midget Prep team has now won 14 in a row, and leads the CSSHL's top division.
Upon their return to Shawnigan, the Midget Prep team also learned that Grade 10 athlete Seiya T. has been named to the BC U-16 team for the upcoming Canada Winter Games.
Shawnigan's Bantam Prep team had a light weekend, falling 6-2 to Pursuit of Excellence in a single game in the Okanagan.
Meanwhile, the Girls Prep team enjoyed a trip to Ontario for the annual Two Nations Cup tournament. Facing some of the top female teams in North America, the girls earned a 2-3 record, including wins over the Gloucester-Cumberland Lady Grads and Illinois and losses to Alaska, Meijer (Michigan), and Northwood.
While in the Toronto area, the girls also watched a CIAU women's game featuring Brock and Guelph Universities, and enjoyed a tour of the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Shawnigan's Junior Varsity team is now five games into an 18-game season, having already clashed with Cowichan Secondary, Frances Kelsey, and Brentwood College School. The team is practicing three times a week, in a fun but competitive structure. The 'Development Squad' faces-off against Shawnigan's Girls Prep team on Thursday afternoon.
On and off-ice practices have also begun for team 'Shawood' – a developmental squad comprised of less experienced players from Shawnigan and Brentwood. The team is looking forward to a few tournaments and exhibition matches in the new year.
