Reconnecting, learning and looking forward

Staff prepare for the year ahead
Prior to welcoming our students back to campus after the upcoming Labour Day long weekend, Shawnigan operations, administrative and education staff have been enjoying their own Opening Week.

This past week has represented an opportunity for our staff community to learn about the wide variety of activities that happened on campus during July and August, reconnect after the summer break, and engage in professional development and training in preparation for the beginning of the school year.

It has been a particularly exciting week as we currently have Disney filming on campus. Different locations on our campus have been transformed into film sets for the production of “Upside Down Magic” – a movie to be released on Disney +. Some of our local students took the initiative to audition and have been on campus in recent weeks as part of the cast. The presence of a film crew on campus also provides us with a unique educational opportunity for our students and staff interested in film production.

Opening Week for staff focuses largely on collaborative working and community building. This week has featured a wide variety of information and professional development sessions for the whole staff community, as well as a range of specialty breakout groups covering topics ranging from academics and athletics to new staff induction and boarding house life.

Our staff enjoyed a Pro-D Day focused on ‘Indigenous Ways’ with Elders from the Cowichan Tribes and other respected indigenous educators coming to campus to connect with our staff.

Several sports camps begin this week to prepare our field hockey and ice hockey athletes for the upcoming season. These camps will continue through this long weekend, wrapping up on Monday ahead of new student Opening Day on Tuesday and returning student Opening Day on Wednesday. Our Prefects will also be on campus this weekend for some training.

We look forward to welcoming all our students, new and returning, back to campus next week.
