Community carols

A Grade 11 initiative
As their first community initiative of the year, the Grade 11 Round Table members have come up with the idea of creating a COVID-safe carolling video to be shared virtually with the wider Shawnigan Lake community.

The Round Table student leaders have recorded each Shawnigan boarding house individually singing one of the twelve verses from the classic Christmas carol The Twelve Days of Christmas and are now editing the video together. Additionally, MacKinley B. and James B. sang a special duet that will be included in the final video.

“This was a really fun project that took many hands to accomplish, ranging from the help of people in the AV Production Facility / recording studio to asking students all around the school to dance,” shares MacKinley. “James, Dom and I took on this challenge because we all have a passion for the arts and wanted to create a project that really could be special but, most importantly, put a smile on everyone’s face. Recording the audio with Mr. Erickson and filming with Mr. Trafford was super exciting and really put me in the Christmas spirit. I can’t wait for everyone to watch it!”

In a related initiative, the Round Table participants have collected giant homemade cards from each House that will be sent out to community recipients.

“This Round Table team has assembled seamlessly and the students have collaborated with one another in a wonderfully symbiotic and synergistic way,” says Head of Prep School Programming Kim Edgson, who holds a supporting staff role on the Grade 11 Round Table. “They’ve come up with this idea as their first adventure together and have had a great deal of fun doing it.”

Shawnigan Round Table groups give students in Grades 8 through 11 the opportunity to explore teamwork and leadership, while collaborating with their peers to plan events and initiatives for their grade groups, the whole School and the broader community.

Shawnigan Lake School is adhering to all COVID-19 guidelines released by the BC Ministries of Health and Education, including those regarding learning cohorts, physical distancing and mask-wearing when appropriate.
