Welcome back from the Shawnigan Lake School Guidance Office!
Despite a longer than usual summer break, our students have slotted right back into their academic rhythms and we have already begun meeting with many of the Grade 12 students. This is always an exciting time of the year as the Grade 12s really begin to embrace what is in front of them.
There have been two new amazing additions to our office this summer. Joining myself and Ms. Dewis is Guidance Counsellor Ms. Lindsey Doland, who comes from St. Michaels University School in Victoria and will be covering Mrs. Gottfried’s maternity leave. Ms. Doland has also worked with students overseas at the International School of Macau and comes with tremendous experience working with university-bound students.
We are also excited to announce the addition of a new Athletic Advisor. Jame Pollock, who many of you may know as the House Director of Lonsdale’s and as a coach in our ice hockey program, will be assisting us in the Guidance Office as we work to support our students with athletic ambitions. Mr. Pollock will be creating office hours shortly and we will make sure to let you and our student-athletes know when and in what capacity he will be working with us.
Though we are only in our second week of school and our first full week of classes, we have already held two seminars aimed at our Grade 12 students, aimed in particular for those applying to programs in the UK and the United States, which have earlier deadlines and requirements. We have also let students know that Mr. Wilke and Mrs. Edgson will be running an SAT Prep class for interested students later this fall.
Looking forward, we’re excited to report that we have a blend of virtual and in-person university events coming up. Some of the highlights of these events include:
Sep 20 – King’s College London, University of Manchester and University of Glasgow Sep 24 – GO Scholarship Seminar Oct 4 – University of British Columbia Oct 14 – Ie University (Spain) Oct 15 – University of Southern California Oct 22 – Boston University
As always, if you have any questions about what we are doing in the Guidance Office, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me.
We acknowledge with respect the Coast Salish Peoples on whose traditional lands and waterways we live, learn and play. We are grateful for the opportunity to share in this beautiful region, and we aspire to healthy and respectful relationships with those who have lived on and cared for these lands for millennia.
