Athletes on several of Shawnigan’s competitive teams got a jumpstart on the fall sports season with a series of training camps on campus last weekend.
The field hockey, U18 female Prep and U15 boys’ Prep ice hockey, and volleyball teams all arrived at the School a few days early to shake off the rust, bond as a team, and prepare for competition that will be starting before they know it.
Field hockey got off to an “amazing” start, according to head coach Mrs. Andi Conroy. The talented group returning from last year has been bolstered by some international students and some strong juniors coming up. The Grade 12 leadership is “stronger than ever,” and team spirit is on the rise thanks in part to some valuable bonding time on the Thunder Rugby canoe.
“We have the potential to be very competitive,” Mrs. Conroy says.
The season will get underway with the Friendship Cup tournament on September 15 and 16, with all of Shawnigan’s teams taking part.
The U18 female Prep ice hockey team had three “pretty intense” days of camp, including team-building, fitness training, several on-ice practice sessions, and two games against the U15 Prep boys’ team, with the girls picking up their first-ever win in friendly competition against the U15 boys. Of the 20 players, seven are new to the team, and they all came into camp excited and ready for the season.
“The new players fit in seamlessly, and the veterans did a good job of welcoming them,” head coach Ms. Carly Haggard said.
The girls, who reached the Canadian Sport School Hockey League championship game last year, will play an exhibition game at home this Sunday at 5 p.m. against the U18 AAA Vancouver Island Seals. Late next week, they will travel to Ontario for the 64-team Stoney Creek University Showcase tournament.
The U15 Prep boys had a similar camp to the U18 girls.
“The players learned a lot about each other had some of the workouts and regular things we will be doing off-ice throughout the year,” coach Mr. James Pollock said. “There was some solid team building and friendships made.”
The U15s will co-host a CSSHL Showcase with Pacific Coast Hockey Academy on September 28–October 1.
This is the first year in recent memory, if ever, that the School has held a pre-season volleyball camp, and it happened at the urging of the players themselves.
“We have a lot of enthusiasm, especially from the Grade 8s and 9s from last year,” coach Lisa Fawcett said. “Volleyball is their thing.”
The camp focused on skill development for the upcoming season. Shawnigan won the Central Vancouver Island junior B championship last year, and with most of the players from that team returning, they opted to move up to the A division this year to get better competition and further develop the program.
