Zoom Film Festival

Students from Shawnigan’s Film Production 360 (arts and activities) group joined their peers from across the province last weekend to walk the red carpet at the Zoom Film Festival hosted by Mulgrave School in West Vancouver.

Zoom Fest is an intense 48-hour challenge in which students receive a prop and a theme via email, then have exactly two days to plan, shoot, edit and submit their films. Entries this year came from all over the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, and Kamloops. Organizers received more than 100 submissions in total.

Four groups from Shawnigan submitted films to the competition, and one received nominations for best editing, cinematography and overall film. The film, Monkeying Around, was conceived by Kenzie G., Owen L., Ethan M., Charlene K. and Ash B., and starred Georgia B. All but Ethan and Georgia attended the awards last Saturday along with Mr. Aren Goodman.

“Mulgrave really knows how to throw a party,” Mr. Goodman commented. “The place looked amazing, with everyone all dressed up, fancy lighting, a red-carpet photographer, a student videographer doing interviews, and even an ice sculpture. They also had their own take on the ‘flower crown,’ which was the prop for this year.”

Zoom Fest has existed since 1999, but this is the first time Shawnigan has entered. Mr. Goodman promises that the School will make it a “bigger thing” next year.
