December Sports Update

Ice Hockey

Morgan J.’s return to the national U18 team is just one of the many highlights for Shawnigan’s U18 Prep girls’ ice hockey team.

After helping Canada to a gold medal in the 2023 IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship, Morgan was named this week to Canada’s roster for the 2024 tournament in Switzerland. Morgan is one of nine players returning from the team that won gold last January.

In November, Morgan and Shawnigan teammate Taya L. won a bronze medal at the National Women’s Under-18 Championship with Team BC, and Morgan was named the top forward at the tournament.

Shawnigan has been one of the top teams in the Canadian Sport School Hockey League’s U18 Prep female division this season, jumping out to a record of 10 wins and two losses through December 8. Morgan sits third in league scoring with 34 points on 17 goals and 17 assists in 12 contests.

Last weekend, the girls travelled to Regina, Saskatchewan for the Mandi Schwartz Memorial Tournament, the largest female U18 AAA tournament in Western Canada. Shawnigan played five games at the event, against strong competition from Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta.

Shawnigan played its typical fast, competitive, aggressive, offensive and relentless style of game, but their biggest hurdle proved to be the other teams’ outstanding goaltending. Despite generating 215 shots on goal over the five games, Shawnigan scored just 11 times, and finished with two wins, two losses and one tie, good enough for seventh place out of 16 teams.

The U18 Prep boys’ team has also been playing strong hockey this season, with 13 wins, three regulation losses, one overtime loss and one shootout loss over their first 18 games through December 10. Shawnigan has been invited back to the Circle K Classic U18 AAA Tournament in Calgary — one of the top tournaments in the world for that age group. Last year, Shawnigan reached the final four out of 32 teams.

The U15 Prep boys have been on a tear, winning their last three games, including an overtime thriller against Delta Black last Friday. Liam C., Donagh E., Henri Z. and Carson P. have led the way with excellent performances.

The girls’ development teams played their first games against Brentwood College School on Tuesday. The program has expanded from a combined effort between the two schools (known as “Shaw-Wood”) to distinct teams with 30 players from Shawnigan and 43 from Brentwood. This is the first hockey experience for many of the girls, including international players who have never been on ice before. In addition to several exhibition games against Brentwood, the development teams will be hosting a 3-on-3 tournament with Brentwood and a team from Vancouver in February.

Rowing

In mid-November, Shawnigan hosted a camp to support creating national team junior girls’ and boys’ eights crews, with Abby M., Dylan A. and Arden A. taking part. “We had perfect water and two beautiful weekends with identified talent from across Vancouver Island,” Head of Rowing Jennifer Parfitt commented. “It was such a great opportunity for kids of similar ability to come together.”

Cross Country

Christian L. qualified for the provincial championships in November by placing 13th out of 106 runners in the senior boys’ division at the Island championship. Christian went straight from a regatta in Seattle to cross country provincials in Surrey and finished 30th in his division, with a 5K time of 17:59 – 66 seconds faster than his Island championship time.

Outdoors

The Outdoor Pursuits sports group ran a Level 1 sea kayak skills course with Paddle Canada, the national certifying body. Participating students learned kayak strokes and theory on campus and on Shawnigan Lake, then completed three day trips on the ocean at Mill Bay, Cowichan Bay, and Pedder Bay. Congratulations to Baden A., Rowan D., Alexa M., Maya M. and Oliver V., who completed the course.

Basketball

Basketball is in full swing. Shawnigan has an unprecedented seven teams this season, playing games every weekend from now until the middle of February.

The junior varsity boys’ team is hosting its first-ever War on the Lake Shore tournament this weekend. Twelve top junior varsity teams from across Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland are coming to campus to battle. Games will be played in both gyms, running from 11 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
