May Sports Update

Spring sports are in full swing at Shawnigan, and teams are in full gear this month, with their sights set on qualifying for Island and provincial tournament berths, or in some cases, reaching the podium at national championships. Our campus has been especially busy preparing for the Stadium Series rugby event on May 2 and the Shawnigan Lake School Regatta on May 9-11.

Rugby

All of Shawnigan’s rugby teams have been busy over the last few weeks, leading up to the Stadium Series games at the School this Friday, and playoffs and provincials later this month.

Both Colts teams played against St. George’s last Saturday (April 26). The A team lost a physical match 35-21, but showed a lot of good things, especially their refusal to quit, as they scored the last two tries to keep things close. The “Killer B’s” won their own high-energy game. The A’s responded by calling a team meeting on Monday – the players’ idea – followed by a short late-night practice. They went on to defeat Claremont 35-21 on Tuesday. Earlier in the month, the Colts attended the Tropical Sevens tournament in Tampa, Florida.

The Iron Women took two teams to the Tropical Sevens tournament; both the U16 and U18 teams finished fourth in their respective tournaments. Back home, the senior squad is undefeated in XV play, with wins this spring over Quw’ustun, Alberni District, Mark R. Isfeld, and Brentwood. The development squad played against Georges P. Vanier this Tuesday, and the senior team will face Vanier again next Tuesday.

The Colts, Iron Women and 1st and 2nd XV boys’ XV sides were all in action on Friday as Shawnigan hosted a full slate of Stadium Series matches featuring schools from Vancouver Island and the Mainland. In addition to the Colt A’s facing Brentwood, the Iron Women took on D.W. Poppy, and both senior boys’ teams took on St. George’s. Beyond the pitch, the events included a performance by the senior rock band.

“We couldn’t be more excited to welcome the full School community for what promises to be a great showcase of the sport we’re so proud and passionate about,” Head of Rugby Mr. John Tait said prior to Friday’s games.

Rowing

Leading up to our own Shawnigan Lake School Regatta on May 9-11, the School has had excellent results in a pair of local regattas.

At the Maple Bay Regatta on April 12 and 13, Shawnigan rowers finished first in the U18 women’s novice double (Lauren W. and Paula J.) and U19 men’s double (Dylan A. and JD P.), second in the U19 men’s quad (JD P., Sam T., Steven D. and Justus F.), U17 men’s coxed quad (Cedric S., Kyle J. Thomas Y., Nik O. and Mingyo K.), and U15 men’s quad (Arda G., Naro G., Theo V., Oliver L. and Bronwyn F)., and third in the U19 women’s eight (Kathryn Y., Isabella P., Sophia W., Shelby H., Samantha P., Charlotte L., Lauren W., Scarlett A., and Imogen N., U17 women’s four (Ella-Rae M., Alaia R., Kalissa S., Alex F. and Sloane W.), and U19 women’s quad (Sophia W., Samantha P., Charlotte L. and Shelby H.).

At the Brentwood Regatta on April 18-20, Shawnigan earned gold in the U19 women’s lightweight double (Kathryn Y. and Isabella P.), silver in the U19 men’s double (Dylan A. and JD P.), and U15 men’s quad (Theo V., Arda G., Naro G., Oliver L. and Jack P.), and bronze in the U15 women’s quad (Edie H., Emily D., Camilla V., Henley D. and Bronwyn F.). There might have been more medals for Shawnigan, but several finals were cancelled due to wind.

Shawnigan is still looking for volunteers for our own regatta. Please contact Head of Rowing Mrs. Jennifer Parfitt at jparfitt@shawnigan.ca if you can help out!

Soccer

The senior girls’ soccer team travelled to Victoria last Friday and Saturday for the Independent Schools Association championships hosted by St. Michaels University School, where they played four excellent games. The team has also qualified for North Islands, which will take place on Salt Spring Island on May 5 and 6.

Tennis

There is a new format this year, which has split tennis programs into separate girls’ and boys’ teams, and Shawnigan has adapted quickly, with both girls’ and boys’ teams finishing in the top two at North Islands earlier this week and earning berths in the Island championships at Brentwood College School next Monday. The boys will be the top seed from the North going into Islands, while the girls are seeded second. Both teams will attempt to qualify for the provincial championships at West Point Grey Academy later this month.

“This is a big deal for our team as we are a very small tennis program with big aspirations,” said Mrs. Andi Conroy, head coach of Shawnigan’s tennis program. “It really is a very big step for us.”

Squash

The squash program has been busy all year with events on and off campus. In April, Shawnigan hosted the Mike Johnson Classic, which featured top players from across Canada, including several alumni, and a Squash BC silver event. This weekend, two players – Jasper C. and Ryan Q. – are attending the Canadian Junior National Championships in Toronto.

Adventure Sports

Although adventure sports aren’t competitive, Shawnigan did participate in the Cowichan River Youth Kayak Festival in April, the largest youth-focused kayak festival in Canada. The School sent 12 students in total out of 55 participants from across Vancouver Island. By the third day, all students were successfully running the first rapid of the Marie Canyon section of the Cowichan River. Abigail L. completed the entire canyon twice over the weekend. Emma H., who is brand new to whitewater kayaking this year, successfully rolled her kayak in current, which is a remarkable accomplishment for someone with such little experience. And Daniel D. earned recognition for the massive improvement he has made since joining adventure sports in the fall.

Ice Hockey

The ice hockey season has been over for a month and a half, but the Canadian Sports School Hockey League rolled out its award announcements over the last few weeks, with Shawnigan’s Taya L. taking one of the top honours as Female U18 Prep MVP. Taya, who is committed to Cornell University for next season, was also named a BC Division First Team All-Star. Her teammate, Lola M., was a finalist for Top Defenceman in the Female U18 Prep league, and joined Zoe C. as a BC Division Second Team All-Star. U18 Prep boys’ team captain Vincent C. was named a BC Division Second Team All-Star.
