Cowichan Music Festival

Shawnigan students shine at this year's music festival!
Throughout February and March, a number of Shawnigan Lake School students performed at the 64th Annual Cowichan Music Festival.

“The Cowichan Music Festival is an amazing opportunity for young artists to perform in public, in a safe and supportive environment, with like-minded students, and receive valuable feedback from skilled adjudicators,” says Shawnigan Lake School’s Director of Music, Ms. Shannon Tyrrell. “I see such a huge improvement in my students after the Festival experience; they focus and polish their pieces with intent, and become more confident performers.”

On March 3, the “Gala Recital” for Vocal and Dance competitors took place. Followed by the Highlights Concert on March 6th where five students and one choir was invited to perform. This concert brings the best of the best together in the hopes of a spot at Provincials.

“This year’s Festival results were huge. In the five years I personally have been bringing students to the Cowichan Festival, this is the best outcome we have had, by far,” applauds, S. Tyrrell. “I am so proud of all the participating Shawnigan Lake School students for their hard work and efforts, and thankful to the Festival committee for their dedication and support.”

The Shawnigan Lake School results are exceptional. Out of 16 performances last night, six were Shawnigan students:

Nate B: won three scholarships and was invited to Provincials as the Intermediate strings competitor.
Alex C: won two scholarships and was invited to Provincials as the Senior Strings competitor.
Michelle E: won a scholarship and was invited to Provincials as the Intermediate Musical Theatre competitor.
Grace MD: won two scholarships and was invited to Provincials as the Intermediate Classical Voice competitor.
Spencer D: won two scholarships and was invite to Provincials as the Senior Classical Voice competitor.
Bongani M: won a scholarship and was invited to Provincials as an Observer.
Jae J: won a scholarship
Both the Chamber Choir and Concert Choirs received scholarships and all three choirs including the Curriculum Choir were asked to submit a recording as part of the Provincial Competitions. Choirs that are successful at the Provincial level are then asked to compete at the National level.

In addition, Shawnigan had many dancers perform at this year’s Festival through their extra curricular dance studio, Barre None Dance Studio, and they all did very well. There was one dance team which consisted of all Shawnigan Lake School dancers - Lindsay, Bernice and Serana, who placed 1st for their own choreographed Jazz routine.

All groups and individuals did themselves and the School proud over the past two weeks at Festival. Being part of the greater community is an important aspect of Shawnigan School life.
