Students excel at Model UN in Vancouver.
The Canada International Model United Nations was held in Vancouver, May 24-26. Five Shawnigan delegates participated and one of them sent the following letter to Mr. Klassen upon their return:

Personally, I had one of the most memorable experiences of my life during the conference. The rest of the group (from what I have heard at least) had a fantastic time as well.

In my committee, I tried extremely hard to stand my group as a tiny developing country (Haiti), and successfully included many of my suggestions in all 3 resolutions. Despite my successful attempt, my strong allies/competitors seemed to overpower the delegation of Haiti. Although some of the delegates (such as China, Japan, etc.) did not stand their country's position, their excellent speeches and well-rounded social skills had intimidated the delegation of Haiti, and I had lost faith in winning any (utterly honest, not being humble or anything) awards at all.

During the closing ceremony, we were hurried to leave the conference in order to catch the 5:00pm ferry. As I was almost certain that the wonderful delegation of Uganda (Julianne) would receive an award, and the boys wanted to stay for the closing ceremony, we stayed past our departure time.

Julianne's committee was the first to present awards, and as we all had expected, she won the award of "Outstanding Delegate." She smiled upon her success and walked towards her committee chair with phenomenal confidence and pride. We were all proud of her.

As we were surging forward to congratulate her on her success, my committee was next to present the awards. I heard the usual speech, which is approximately a minute. Finally, names were called, "The delegation of United Kingdom for Honorable mention!"

Right after that comment, I thought to myself, "I am not going to get an award, he was AWESOME and he got honorable mention...."

I applauded for his success as I patiently listened for the rest of the awards being presented. Finally, the best delegate award was about to be presented. I thought to myself, "It must be Cuba, he was incredible and he was very persuasive during the conferences." It was not Cuba. It was the delegation of The Republic of Haiti. My eyes flung open as the rest of the so-called "wolf pack" gave me the best support. I sprung from my chair, and found my legs moving forward. Someone should have taken a picture of my face - it was hilarious! I looked like a hopelessly lost girl who just found out the world is round.

Julianne and I were overjoyed by our successes. Thank you for your support! We couldn't have done it without you!
