Junior Boys Basketball

SLS Jamboree Champions!
This past weekend, Shawnigan hosted it's annual Junior Boys Basketball Jamboree. Participating teams included Mark Isfeld Secondary (Comox), Pacific Christian School (Victoria) and West Point Grey Academy (Vancouver) in this round robin tournament format.

The junior boys opened the Jamboree against a young, but feisty West Point Grey Academy. They gained a quick lead and never looked back en route to a 48-21 victory. Kento H. led the way, scoring 10 of his total 14 points in the first quarter. However, the highlight of the game was the balance attack and overall positive energy from the team that contributed to their success.

On Saturday morning, the junior boys played a rematch versus Mark Isfeld, a team we recently played at the Victoria Christmas Tournament.  But this time, home court advantage appeared to play a role; we were able to dominate the boards and hold Mark Isfeld to a scoreless third quarter, earning a 49-35 victory. We shot proficiently from the free-throw line and notable defensive contributions came from our reserve players, Tristan M., Akshay M., and Jeremy P. Leading the team in scoring was Peter W. with 8 points, accompanied by Irvin C. and Mostyn F. who both chipped in with 7 points each.

With two wins each, Pacific Christian (PCS) and our junior boys squad locked up in the final game to determine the winner of the Jamboree. As with the previous games, we started strong with a 19-5 run in the first quarter against a tough and gritty PCS team. The second quarter proved to belong to PCS as their determination, along with some sloppy play from our boys, allowed them to fight back and cut the lead, bridging the score to 27-18 (for Shawnigan) entering half time. However, we were able to utilize halftime to regroup and we were relentless with our pressure defense in the second half. We went on a 16-4 run to open the scoring margin and secured the victory with a final score of 52-39. Mostyn F. paced the scoring with a game high of 16 points, joined by Kento H.'s 10 points to lead the team. Nathan B. was solid in locking down Pacific Christian's best player and we also saw great defensive play from Chris L. and Jeremy P.  With the victory against Pacific Christian, we stood solely as the undefeated team in our annual Jamboree.

The team would like to thank the parents and staff that came out to watch the games. In particular, we wish to express our deepest appreciation to Mrs. Pasquale who helped with the organization of the Jamboree and our student-led group of minor officials.
