The 54th annual Shawnigan Lake School Regatta happened this past weekend and it was an amazing success. For the first time in many years, we started on Friday night. There were 4 time trials scheduled, and because of high winds, we only completed 2 of these. Saturday morning began, and again the winds came up after only a few races were completed. A 3-hour delay ensued, but at 11am, racing re-started and continued without a delay right until 8:20pm.
The first two events ended up being the highlight of the weekend for our rowers. The regatta started off with two gold medals. Our senior boys coxed four won their race against some very strong competition. Right on the heels of that win came our senior girls coxed four, and they also defeated a strong field.
The rest of the racing saw dominant performances from Vic City, who are now the only club rowing out of Victoria. Other strong results from Shawnigan crews included 3rd place finishes in the senior and juniors boys 8s. Annabel I. placed an impressive 3rd in the senior girls single, followed closely in 5th by Anna K., who is a junior rower. Our senior boys lwt coxed four placed 3rd.
The junior boys 8 broke into two fours, and they both earned 2nd place finishes. The junior girls coxed four admittedly had an off day, and placed just behind Brentwood, who they had beaten two weeks ago. They rebounded nicely on Sunday though, as Ana G. and Maya J. placed as the top school in the double event.
The grade 8s raced for 2000m for the first time in their young careers. They gained valuable experience this weekend, and hopefully they learned some lessons they can take with them into next year.
The regatta occurs every year because of the amazing support the School receives from parents, staff, students, alumni and even parents of alumni. A huge thank you goes to everyone who gave up part (or all) of their weekend to make this event happen. Thank you.
The regatta is constantly evolving, as we now host thousands of people at the Provincial Park each year. This year was an incredible success, and we are already looking ahead to make it better next year. See you all in 2015!
