Junior Hockey in Portland

Tournament report from south of the border
Day 1— The trip started off with a bit of fun and team building as it was the afternoon of Hallowe'en. On the ferry from Victoria to Port Angeles, the team had a costume contest with 1st place going to a peanut butter and jam sandwich by Noah T and Ben R. Once in the States, the team stopped in Port Angeles for about an hour of trick or treating.

Day 2—We started off with a work out and then a hydrotherapy session to help in the recovery process after a long day of travel. Later that day we went for lunch and a shop at the local outlet mall. That evening we played Game 1 against the Portland Junior Winterhawks, losing 5-4. Kyle M. was awarded the Gold Hat as players' player of the game.

Day 3—We played a morning game against the same opponent but with a very different outcome. Shawnigan came out flying, and won 7-3 in a much better performance. The winner of the gold hat in this match was Kabore D. After the game the boys returned to the hotel for another recovery session and a meal.

Day 4—The team start of the educational part of the journey. We began with a tour of the Nike Headquarters, running into Olympic Gold Medal decathlete Ashton Eaton. We also saw long distance running legend Alberto Salazar run a training session with some current elite level runners. The tour ended with a stop at the employee store where the boys did some shopping. Next up was a trip north to the city of Olympia where we visited the Washington State Capital Building.

Day 5—We started off with a tour of the Microsoft facilities and offices. The highlight here for the boys was all of the interactive games, some of which are not even released yet.
Up next was some good old fashioned fun at the go karts track. The top time went to Cody S. Next up was a walk around and some lunch at the Seattle Public Market. In the evening we attended a game featuring Coach Pollock's former WHL team, the Seattle Thunderbirds. At the game the boys were given an interesting chat about education and hockey from the NHL scout of the Calgary Flames. He highlighted the four key things that scouts look for with number one being character - sounds kind of like Shawnigan! After the game we were given a tour of the T-Birds' dressing room and training area. It was very cool for the boys to see Coach P's old photos and his name on the Honors Board that features alumni who went on to play in the NHL.

Day 6—The last leg of the journey started with a tour of the Boeing Factory and Museum. Finally, the group was on their way home for two days of rest before we gather again to head up island to compete in the Comox Bantam A Rep Tournament.
