Learning about leadership
The Grade 8s have been studying leadership. Focusing on the characteristics of an effective leader, the students have been involved in a number of hands on problem-solving and team-building activities during their Wednesday morning meetings with Mrs. Hutchins. This week, the Grade 8s worked in partners to navigate through a field of metaphorical landmines. Each partner took turns traveling through the minefield with their eyes closed, while the other partner acted as the coach/guide. In addition, each student was asked to write one attribute that he/she brings to the team and place this card in the minefield. While navigating through the obstacles, each student had to pick up an attribute. The discussion produced during the debriefing was exceptional and the students, once again, impressed Mrs. Hutchins with their insightful comments. Life is full of obstacles, risks, and challenges as represented by the landmines; if we try to go it alone without the help of others, we will often fail. Asking for help is not always easy; this activity proved how valuable it can be to have someone in our life to rely on for guidance and support. Each person brings a talent or a skill to the team, and we must work together to utilize these abilities for the good of all. On Friday, January 30, 2015, Amelia, Cailey, Aaryan, Dana, Vanessa, and Gabby will travel to St. Micheals University School to attend From Surviving to Thriving, a one-day leadership conference specially designed for Grade 8 students.
