On Tuesday, Ms. Woollven announced the winner of the 2014 Governor General's Academic Medal to Clarke Hardy ’14 (Duxbury):
The Governor General’s Medal was first awarded in 1873, and has since become one of the most prestigious awards that a student in a Canadian educational institution can receive. A Bronze medal is awarded at the secondary school level to the student who achieves the highest average based on all grade 11 and 12 courses after Provincial Exams have been written.
Clarke came to Shawnigan in grade 9 and other than his first month at the School, he was on the Headmaster's Honour Roll and earned Dean’s Dinner for every assessment. If you look at his transcript, he earned an A in every course he took at Shawnigan, including 100% in French 12.
Clarke received Junior Sport Colours, Junior and Senior House Colours, Junior and Senior Fine Art Colours, and Junior and Senior Academic Colours. He was also a School Prefect.
He was the top student in his class for grades 10, 11 and 12, and he graduated last June as Head Student with an average of 96.8% on his top ten senior academic courses.
Clarke received a Ministry of Education Scholarship for his amazing Provincial results, where he earned 92%, 93%, 97%, 99% and 100% on his five exams.
He earned the Advance Academic Award last June for taking 8 APs and earning an average of 98.6% in these courses. On his exams he earned a 5 in Calculus, Physics B, Chemistry, French, and both Physics C exams. He earned a 4 in English Literature and European History. These results earned him the honour of being a National AP Scholar.
Clarke was offered entrance scholarships to McGill University, University of Toronto, the University of Waterloo, as well as Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario where he started in September in the engineering program, with a plan to pursue Engineering Physics.
I’d like to thank Clarke for taking time during his reading week to come back to the School today. Please join me in congratulating him as he comes forward to receive the 2014 Governor General’s Academic Medal and Certificate from Mr. Robertson.
