On Thursday morning, a student spoke to the student body about her desire to get involved in UNICEF's mission of helping children in need.
This morning, I want to talk with you about an organization that I recently encountered in China. While visiting a hospital, I met a group of people that were helping children with disabilities. They wore bright, blue and white shirts and always carried big smiles on their faces. After a brief chat, I found out that they were volunteers from UNICEF.
As some of you may not know, UNICEF stands for United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund. The volunteers were there not only to help children with their physical challenges, but more importantly, to give them mental and emotional support. UNICEF was also helping these children to overcome the social stigma they often face, and provide them equitable access to regular schools. With the support from the UNICEF volunteers, these children felt loved and happier. Their smiles were the most genuine smiles I have ever seen in my life. These kids were given wings to be angels. I was surprised to see how an individual or a small group of people can have such a huge impact on children. That day I had a new wish; to one day become a UNICEF volunteer.
UNICEF is one of many non-profit organizations established to ensure the well-being of people of all ages and to protect the world we live in. The organization was established in 1946, and its first mission was to provide food, clothing and health care to European children after World War Two. After 70 years, UNICEF has made uncountable contributions towards the well-being of children throughout the world. UNICEF accomplishes its missions through determination, innovation, reach, influence, and last but not least, leadership.
It has become clear to me that everyone can make a difference in the world, and I want to bring this power to Shawnigan. As a community, I know we are doing lots already, but I thought you might be interested in what UNICEF can do. We can become involved with UNICEF as a group or as individuals. I am hoping to start a UNICEF club in the school, so more Shawnigan students can contribute to a global non-profit organization that is making a difference in the world. I am really glad to see Groves' House become the first house to participate in a UNICEF initiative.
UNICEF is currently responding to the needs of children and families affected by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that has struck the area in and around Nepal's Capital, Kathmandu. The earthquake has toppled buildings and destroyed roads and infrastructure. UNICEF has been working in Nepal for 50 years. It has resources to bring aid where it’s most needed and the expertise to save lives.
Next year, I am hoping to work with a group of passionate students who are willing to learn more about UNICEF and help make the world a better place.
