On Friday, Shawnigan took its biggest contingent yet to Richmond to participate in the ISA Swimming Championships.
The swimmers battled not only strong winds on the ferry, but rival teams with more than 100 swimmers – large groups compared to Shawnigan's 16-member squad.
Given the format of the event, with no limit on the number of swimmers who can score points towards team awards, Coach Carmen Boudreau said Shawnigan's finish (10th overall, 8th in girls' competition) is indicative of an excellent team effort. "It was a delight to chaperone such a lovely and enthusiastic group," Ms. Boudreau added.
Ava B., Anders F. and Nicole S. all placed in the top eight of their individual events, sometimes in events with 50 or more competitors. Three Shawnigan relay teams also placed 5th overall, with strong contributions from Ryan S., Georgia H., Sam J., Nicole S., Anders F., and Ava B.
Shawnigan's highlight came from Sam J., who finished 2nd in the 50m freestyle event, only .01 seconds behind the winner. This is the best result in the history of Shawnigan swimming.
