Weekend hockey update

Showcases at home and away

Three Shawnigan teams combined for 12 games this weekend at CSSHL showcase events at home and in Penticton. Despite heavy snowfall and treacherous road conditions, the Charlie Purdey Arena remained open, playing host to 14 Midget Varsity matchups over four days.

Midget Varsity Black:

The Midget Varsity Black team fought off a slow start to post an impressive weekend of results. The team outshot Pilot Mount 41-18 Thursday evening, but lost 3-1. On Saturday, the team earned a 6-3 victory over Banff, thanks in part to a four-point performance from Brett R. A 5-1 win over Edge later on Saturday followed by a 6-2 triumph over International Hockey Academy gave the team six points from its four games – enough to move into second place in the CSSHL's Varsity Division standings.

Midget Varsity Gold:

14 points from Sam G. helped Shawnigan Varsity Gold to a pair of victories on home ice. The team earned 6-2 and 6-1 wins over Banff Hockey Academy, while suffering losses to Edge (4-2) and Pilot Mound (6-4).

Varsity Girls:

Shawnigan's girls team honoured their absent coach with three convincing victories at a female varsity showcase in Penticton. Shawnigan gave starts to Colby W., Kiara S. and Gracie M. – with the three goaltenders allowing just one goal combined over the weekend. The team earned wins over Banff (4-1) and Coeur D'Alene (4-0 and 3-0). Coach Tim Coy was running the bench for the girls, with Coach Carly Haggard at home for the birth of her first child!
