Students saw a different side of politics on Wednesday with a visit to the Malahat First Nation.
The Political Studies 11 class met with Councillor George Harry for a discussion of the tribe's governance and economic development.
Jeff and Wes Edwards then took the group onto the water for a paddle in a traditional war canoe.
"First Nations have engaged in politics for thousands of years on this land," says political studies teacher Paul Klassen. "It was important to begin our study of politics by visiting our neighbouring First Nation community as we live and study on their traditional territory."
We acknowledge with respect the Coast Salish Peoples on whose traditional lands and waterways we live, learn and play. We are grateful for the opportunity to share in this beautiful region, and we aspire to healthy and respectful relationships with those who have lived on and cared for these lands for millennia.
