Egg take

Firsthand experience in the Mark Hobson Hatchery

A new batch of students is helping to produce a new generation of salmon.

On Thursday morning, Grade 9 science students convened at the Mark Hobson Hatchery to collect eggs and milt from mature Coho salmon.

The strong, mature fish were delivered to the School on Saturday – part of the continuing annual cycle of counting, fertilizing, incubating and releasing salmon perpetuated by Shawnigan's E-club and Science 9 programs.

The cycle takes three years, with mature homegrown Coho returning to the Shawnigan watershed every fall.
