My Hockey Day in Canada experience
Read MoreOnce a year, the weekly Hockey Night in Canada broadcast turns into Hockey Day in Canada, with a full day of NHL games interspersed with stories from a selected community in Canada. For the 2024 edition, Victoria, BC was the lucky community, and Shawnigan was fortunate enough to be part of the festivities. First, Mr. Andrew Ference, who won the Stanley Cup with the Boston Bruins in 2011 and is now an ice hockey coach at the School, brought the Cup to Shawnigan. Then, Alex Nelson and Morgan Jackson from our U18 Prep girls’ team were invited to take part in the events in Victoria, which included a gala dinner, a game with NHL alumni, and, for Alex, a visit to the Songhees Wellness Centre. Here are some of Alex’s reflections on what the week meant to her. -

Read MoreShawnigan rugby coach and Indigenous Community Engagement Coordinator Clay Panga had the honour to travel to New Zealand in summer 2023 with Thunder Rugby, a BC-based program aimed at introducing rugby to Aboriginal youth. It was a transformative experience for the 40 young people who made the trip, and for Mr. Panga himself. -
What does a coach look for in a high school athlete?
Read MoreSports are a core aspect of the Shawnigan Lake School experience, and our coaches work to encourage students to pursue personal excellence while at the same time instilling values such as courage, integrity, loyalty, respect, honesty and commitment. While coaches are always glad to find athletes with skill and a drive to improve, they also look for character, hard work and competitiveness balanced with respect and sportsmanship. Director of Sport and longtime coach Tim Murdy elaborates on the attributes that make for an outstanding high school athlete.
