The Varsity hockey team travelled to Richmond, BC over the winter break for the annual Richmond International Hockey Tournament. The tournament included many teams from all over North America and is generally perceived as a highly-competitive tournament.
The Varsity Team entered the Midget Tier 1 Division with many highly-skilled teams, and played five games in four days.
The team got off to a good start by winning their first contest 1-0 against the Kamloops Blazers.
The next two games were against two very organized and skilled teams, North Shore Winter Club and Ridge Meadows. The game against North Shore was a tough loss, but the team rebounded on a high note against Ridge Meadows and played a solid game. The team was up 2-1 with about five minutes left, but a couple of mental lapses costed them, and the game ended 3-2 for Ridge Meadows.
The final two games pitted Shawnigan against a Seattle U-16 team and Surrey, both of which ended in tough losses, though Shawnigan battled extremely hard in the narrow defeat to Surrey.
Overall, the Varsity team had a great experience in Richmond. Although the team didn't achieve the results they were looking for, the boys still enjoyed the hockey and had a worthwhile experience.
