Senior Boys qualify for AA Provincials

Third place at Island Championship

Shawnigan's Senior Boys are heading to the 'AA' Provincial Basketball Championship for the first time in six years.

The squad earned the third and final berth from the Vancouver Island zone after a gutsy 57-47 victory over rival Brentwood College School on Saturday evening.

After a first-place showing at the North Island Championship, Shawnigan opened the Island tournament with a lop-sided win over Pacific Christian School. Sheldon C. led Shawnigan scorers with 27 points, while Litha N. added 23 points and 10 rebounds.

Thursday evening brought a matchup against host SMUS, with a chance to knock off the defending BC champions and qualify for the 2016 Provincial tournament on the line. Deadlocked heading to the final quarter, SMUS showed its depth and experience, pulling away for a 68-45 win. With the result, SMUS qualified for the Island final (vs. Lambrick Park) as well as the BC championship, leaving Shawnigan to fight through the back door.

A 67-44 victory over Parkland on Saturday morning moved Shawnigan into the third-place game against Brentwood, with the winner advancing to Provincials and the loser heading home.

Having watched the previous few seasons come to an end in similar matchups against Brentwood, Coach Vito Pasquale says his team was determined to do something different this time around. "We gathered for a meal at the end of last season and I challenged these players to do something different … something historic. This group has been in the mix for three years, and they believe they can compete."

Despite trailing by double-digits early in the second half, Shawnigan was able to find timely baskets and clutch defence late in the third-place game, ultimately winning by ten points.

Sheldon C. was named Player of the Game, thanks to his 23-point showing. Mostyn F. and Litha B. both contributed 'double-doubles,' while Litha received a tournament First-Team All-Star award and Sheldon earned Second-Team All-Star honours.

Shawnigan now advances to the BC Championship March 9-12 at the Langley Events Centre. According to Coach Pasquale, "The honest commitment of the players, particularly the seniors, made it happen for us this year."

The coaching staff also thanks the staff and parents who travelled to SMUS to support the team.
