Shawnigan has another banner to hang in the new arena.
The School's Midget Varsity squad won its division championship last week, capping off a remarkable season that included a 13-game winning streak.
After opening the playoffs with a 5-1 win over Coeur D'Alene, Shawnigan suffered a setback against Calgary's Edge School, outshooting their opponents 50-16 yet losing 2-1.
The defeat put Shawnigan into a semifinal against rival Pursuit of Excellence – a matchup many had been expecting to see in the championship game. Eager to defend a title won by their peers last season, Shawnigan upended Pursuit 5-2 before beating Edge 4-2 in the division final to clinch the CSSHL Varsity championship.
"I'm most proud of the fact that we didn't have any individual superstars on the team," Coach Jamie Pollock said, following the championship run. "We wanted to prove to everybody that we were the best 'team' in the league, and the fact that we didn't ride on the back of one or two individual players, like many other teams, is very satistfying as a coach." He added, "The boys played for the guy next to them in the locker room (more so for the guys who are graduating), for the School, and unselfishly, for themselves."
After winning the Varsity division last year, many members of Shawnigan's top team moved up to the CSSHL's Prep division, where the team faced stiff competition from seasoned programs. Finishing in the middle of the pack in the regular season, Shawnigan Prep suffered two defeats during the playoff round robin before beating Yale in what would be the final game for many of the School's seniors.
Shawnigan's Bantam Prep squad also finished the playoffs with an 0-2 record, though many of the players joined the Varsity team for the elimination round of the midget bracket.
Meanwhile, several Shawnigan athletes were honoured for their work on and off the ice at the league's Awards Ceremony on March 10.
Merek P. (Prep), Olin W. (Varsity), and Nathan G. (Bantam) were all named to their respective divisional 'All-academic teams,' while Ben B. was a finalist for the Prep Division MVP award.
