Centennial Rugby Festival

A Celebration of Rugby at Shawnigan

It was a day to celebrate Shawnigan's passion for rugby – both past and present.

Shawnigan launched its Centennial Festival Weekend with Friday's special golf tournament at the Bear Mountain Resort.

Saturday's program opened with a chapel service with a distinctly Welsh feel, as Sir Gareth Edwards was introduced by Rhodri Samuel, with both touching on the role Mr. Samuel's father, Bill, had played in Edwards' development.

Guests then enjoyed a sunny afternoon watching rugby exhibitions including Shawnigan's Girls XV vs. the BC High School Selects, Shawnigan's 1st XV vs. the ISA Selects, and the 'DHL XV' vs. 'Emerging Canada.'

Despite a grim forecast, the storms held off for most of the weekend, as hundreds of alumni and guests returned to the School for the reunion and tribute.

The celebration concluded with a rugby club dinner on Saturday evening, where guests watched a question and answer session between Sir Gareth and Shawnigan's Ander Monro before awards and the unveiling of the School's honourary 'Centennial Men's XV' and 'Centennial Women's XV.'
