Tuesday marked Opening Day at Shawnigan, as staff welcomed students back to a campus primed for the 2016-17 school year.
New students began their influx in the morning, as they met new housemates and took some cautious first steps in their new boarding houses. In the afternoon, returning students filled the hallways with commotion as they caught up with friends and began to unpack and decorate their living spaces.
After an afternoon of greeting and relaxing from their journeys, students then enjoyed a BBQ before a chapel service for new students and meetings in the dorms.
It is, perhaps, uncommon to see young people so excited for the beginning of classes. However, Shawnigan's Head of School, Jade A., says Shawnigan is special because it's about more than just academics. "At other schools you're just there during the day, but here you're coming back to all aspects of your life."
Jade also hopes to see her graduating class achieve special things this year. "We're a really diverse grade with lots of different skills," she says, adding "but we're tight-knit and we work well together."
Roughly 500 students from 30 countries are enrolled at the School this year, including 181 new students.
Classes, sport, and fine arts all begin on Wednesday. The Inter-house Cross Country race runs on Thursday.
