Weekend hockey update

Four Shawnigan teams in action

The hockey season jumped into high gear this weekend, with four of Shawnigan's five teams playing a total of 13 games.

Midget Prep:
The School's Midget Prep team opened the season on home ice with a 5-1 victory over Pacific Coast Hockey Academy on Friday night. The Prep squad then played back-to-back games against Yale Hockey Academy, losing 7-3 on Saturday evening before earning a 5-1 win on Sunday.

Female Varsity:
Shawnigan's girls varsity team also enjoyed playing on home ice for the first time, having opened the inaugural season with a 3-1 record on the road. Hosting a Delta Hockey Academy group that had beaten them with 0.7 seconds remaining two weeks previously, the girls were disappointed to fall 2-1 in overtime on Saturday evening. The girls found vindication, however, earning a 2-0 win early on Sunday, led by Gracie M's shutout performance.

Midget Varsity:
Meanwhile, Shawnigan's two midget varsity teams ventured to Coeur D'Alene, Idaho for a showcase event.

Shawnigan Varsity Black rode stellar defence and goaltending to four consecutive victories to take an early lead in the divisional standings. Cody S. scored four goals and two assists, while Dalan M. and Daniel D. combined for three shutouts, allowing just one goal against in four games played.

Shawnigan Varsity Gold also excelled in Idaho, earning a pair of wins over Coeur D'Alene and a shootout win over Okanagan to go along with a lone loss to Pursuit of Excellence. After five games, Shawnigan Gold's 4-1 record is good for second place in the Midget Varsity division, behind only Shawnigan Black (5-0).
