Shawnigan's week of fighting cancer has come to a ceremonious close.
Sporting this year's blue word shirts inscribed with the word "Wonder," students lined the driveway at 8:30 a.m. for the arrival of the Tour de Rock.
Moving into Marion Hall, students were joined by the entire Shawnigan staff in applauding the Cops for Cancer team for what Headmaster David Robertson called their "worthy endeavor."
Head Student Jade A. spoke about her early-morning shift in the School's 24-hour stationary bike relay, saying that 30 minutes on a bike helped give her a more appreciation for what the Cops for Cancer riders have done.
In turn, Cops for Cancer's Mena Westhaver suggested that two weeks riding around Vancouver Island is nothing compared to what a child endures while undergoing cancer treatment.
Fifteen Shawnigan students had their heads shaved on Tuesday night. After giving the Tour de Rock team an energetic farewell on Wednesday morning, students filed back inside to cheer on the top four fundraisers. Monty M., James M., Naomi S. and Maggie B. all nervously faced the razor in front of their peers, with Monty having raised nearly $7,000 alone. Twelve-year-old Ecole Cobble Hill student Aysia R. also joined the four top Shawnigan students having raised more than $3,000.
Shawnigan presented the Tour de Rock team with a cheque for $30,000, and Deputy Headmaster Barry Welsh says more funds may still be coming in. The Tour de Rock team also presented Shawnigan with a Heart and Soul of Tour de Rock award for the School's ongoing contributions to the cause.
