Supporting Salmon

Students transfer fish into Shawnigan watershed

This year's Environment Club and Environmental Science 11 students have once again been supporting the volunteer efforts of the Mill Bay and District Conservation Society.

Every year at this time, the annual transfer of returning coho salmon from the DFO-supported fish trap at the mouth of Shawnigan Creek up into the Shawnigan Creek Watershed takes place. This year was a particularly busy one for the volunteers as they dealt with impressive returning numbers. In fact, the more than 3,000 fish transferred is the second-highest total since this salmonid enhancement project began more than 30 years ago!

The hands-on educational experience for the students is always one of their more memorable ones. In the next few weeks, a collection of male and female brood stock from this Shawnigan Creek run of coho will be delivered from their holding tanks at Goldstream Hatchery to Shawnigan's Mark Hobson Hatchery.  For all of the Grade 9's (as part of their biology unit), along with the E-Club and Environmental Science 11 students, it will then be time for more exciting experiential learning opportunities.
