Spawning salmon

Science students fertilize fish eggs
Another generation of salmon stock is being produced at the Mark Hobson Hatchery.

On Tuesday morning, Grade 9 science students made some hands-on contributions to the School's salmon enhancement program.

Using mature Coho salmon caught earlier in the year, the students collected the eggs from the females and the milt from the males.

After counting and fertilizing thousands of eggs, the students rinsed and decontaminated them before planting them in the various incubation units in the hatchery.

Tuesday’s lessons were underpinned when Mr. Scott Noble noticed a clipped adipose fin of one particular male, verifying it as a fish that had been spawned at the Mark Hobson Hatchery three years ago.
