Graduating students shared some acquired wisdom as the English department presented 'This I Believe' on Wednesday.
An annual tradition at Shawnigan, 'This I Believe' challenges all English 12 students to compose and deliver original speeches in an initiative that borrows from the legendary radio program created by Edward R. Murrow.
This year's speeches touched on personal challenges and family histories, as well as tributes to mysteries, goodbyes, and even 'being stupid' (once in a while).
"The quality of work we saw tonight shows that the 'pain' and growth that some of you experienced was worth it," Mrs. Wendy Milne, Assistant Head – Academics, told the Grade 12 class after the speeches had concluded. "Your speeches were reflective, humorous, poignant, moving, enlightening, emotional, and [it was] an evening I will not soon forget."
We acknowledge with respect the Coast Salish Peoples on whose traditional lands and waterways we live, learn and play. We are grateful for the opportunity to share in this beautiful region, and we aspire to healthy and respectful relationships with those who have lived on and cared for these lands for millennia.
