First university acceptances of the year made on Tuesday
This week is one of the busiest of the year for the Shawnigan Guidance team, with almost half of the university visits of the year happening over the course of the next few days.
The focus right now is primarily on universities and colleges outside in Canada, in the U.S. and the United Kingdom, according to Guidance Counsellor Hannah Gottfried. Tuesday’s on-campus visitors included UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, the University of Washington, Drexel University and Acadia University.
Shawnigan squash coach Mike Johnson met with the Drexel representative, while Acadia made on-the-spot offers to five current Shawnigan students, which led to “a lot of excited tears!” shares Ms. Gottfrield. For at least one of the students who was made an offer, Acadia was her top choice, making for a happy first day back at school following the recent Thanksgiving break.
Also on Tuesday, Guidance Assistant Amanda Dalke travelled to Victoria with a group of 16 students to attend the Vancouver Island College Event, where 45 U.S. universities and colleges were represented. Wednesday sees five universities visiting Shawnigan’s campus, including Arizona State University, the University of Miami and Boston University, while, on Thursday, a group of students will travel to Vancouver for the Vancouver Area Independent Schools Fair, featuring 80 U.S. colleges.
