Hori Brothers English Language Centre

On June 9, 2025, Shawnigan celebrated the grand opening of the Hori Brothers English Language Centre, located inside the Jim & Kathryn Shaw Library.

This beautiful new facility was donated by Mr. and Mrs. Yoshito and Mizue Hori, who saw their five sons – Kento ’16, Takuto ’18, Kazuto ’20, Tetsuto ’22, and Hiroto ’24 (all Duxbury) – study at Shawnigan.
This learning space is located in the heart of our campus within the Jim & Kathryn Shaw Library and is designed to be an open and collaborative environment for our English language learners as they begin their Shawnigan Journeys. The Horis' vision for The Hori Brothers ELC is to also provide a central space for the entire School community to foster inclusivity, to share cultures, and to inspire our students to be global leaders.

“Through this centre, we hope to provide international students – especially those with limited English proficiency – the opportunity to grow in confidence, broaden their perspectives, and carry the spirit of Shawnigan with them wherever they go,” Mr. Hori said during the opening ceremony.

In gratitude for their gift, the Horis were presented with an anime-inspired art piece portraying all five brothers, created by Grade 10 student Patty Z.
