Rugby at Shawnigan

Boys host Saints; girls advance

Shawnigan rugby teams are in mid-season form, with fields in constant use and coaches, athletes and organizers gearing up for championship tournaments.

Girls:

Shawnigan entered two teams in the Vancouver Island Girls Rugby Sevens Championship this weekend at Brentwood College School. Divided into A and B squads, the girls made huge improvements on the field while growing accustomed to the sevens tournament structure.

The Shawnigan A team earned a 5-0 record before falling in a very close championship game against Belmont. Meanwhile, the B team earned a 3-2 record over the course of the weekend.

"By the end, they were all just playing so well," says Coach Laura Russell, adding "The skill level from all of the teams was really incredible."

The girls will enter Senior and Junior teams into the Provincial Rugby Sevens Championship, May 11-12. The tournament will run at Shawnigan and Brentwood, with select final games taking place at Westhills Stadium as part of the Canada Women's Sevens.

Boys:

Friday was a busy day with nine rugby games taking place on the fields of Shawnigan Lake School. Most of these games were part of the new Stadium Series set up for cross-zone games to ensure accurate rankings going into the Provincial championships.

As Shawnigan was matched up with our good friends and rivals from St George’s School in Vancouver, we included the Colt (U-16) and 2nd XV sides to be a part of this special day. There were games played at 1:00pm, 2:30pm and 4:00pm, with the feature game being the 1st XV match between Shawnigan and St. George’s, played as the final game of the day.

The campus and rugby fields have never looked better, which added to the occasion for the large crowd of spectators. In the end, Shawnigan teams were victorious, winning all three hotly contested matches.

We would to thank all of the teams that added to the occasion and wish them all the best of luck in the remainder of their upcoming games.  This Friday, both the 1st and 2nd XV’s will be hosting Carson Graham Secondary School from North Vancouver. Kick-offs are 2:00 pm for the 2nd XV and 3:00 pm for the 1st XV.
We look forward to seeing you there!
