Rowers shine in St. Catharines

Shawnigan crews score five national medals

Shawnigan's rowing program is celebrating one of its most successful seasons ever, after a strong showing at the National Championships.

29 athletes departed from Shawnigan early on Monday morning (May 28), leaving three days to train on the CSSRA racecourse in St. Catharines and also enjoy some sightseeing in the Niagara Falls area. The region also experienced some adverse weather conditions over the week (including heat, high winds and thunderstorms), though Shawnigan Head of Rowing Colin Mattock says the team handled the conditions very well.

On the water, the School qualified for 10 different finals, with every Shawnigan athlete who travelled to Ontario earning the chance to race on Sunday. Once again, an outstanding junior girls contingent led the way, scoring two gold medals (the first national titles for Shawnigan since 2015) in the span of 90 minutes.

"Everyone here has something to be proud of and they have worked so hard to earn that feeling," says Coach Mattock, adding "It is a great time to be a part of Shawnigan rowing."
