Friendship Cup

Field hockey's season begins
Shawnigan's field hockey program is showing great promise as the season gets underway.

Sept. 14-15, the School co-hosted (along with Brentwood College School) the Friendship Cup tournament – the annual kickoff to the fall campaign.

In the tournament's Premier Division, Shawnigan's 1st XI earned a 2-1 record in round robin play, suffering their lone defeat in a 2-0 scoreline vs. perennial powerhouse Cowichan High School. Advancing to the final, the girls again faced Cowichan, where they took an early lead and fought back from a late deficit to force overtime and ultimately a penalty shootout. Cowichan claimed victory by a 3-2 margin in the shootout, though Shawnigan Coach Andi Conroy says she is thrilled with the character and determination showed by her players.

In other action, Shawnigan's Junior 'A' team earned an unbeaten record in the Competitive Division, while the Junior 'B' group had a stellar performance in the Development Division.

"It's the first time we've ever entered three teams in this event," says Coach Conroy. "To have three strong, competitive sides makes us really excited for our depth in the coming years."
